Donald Louis MacDiarmid was said to be a sickly baby who required more attention than his overwhelmed mother could provide. He was given to his mother's childless sister shortly after his birth and both lived on the same property as an extended part of the family. She was only known as "Auntie" but she was his mother. He was a small man, 5'5" 135 lbs, blonde hair and blue-eyed and once owned several N Dakota track records. He had a stutter in his youth that he overcame by speaking slow and deliberately. He was kind and humble, using his words to inspire deep thought in others. People liked and respected him.
Around 1939 he went to a town dance and ran into an old childhood aquaintance named Hildegard Sitz. They married a year later, both rather old at 28 years old. At 29 Donald joined the US army and arrived in Europe on D-Day+2. He was assigned to a seabee construction unit and made his way to Paris. Then he was sent to the Ardennes to build pontoon bridges, where he was attacked during the first hours of the battle of the bulge. He was constructing a bridge when the Germans attacked it. Donald won a bronze star that day when he carried 3 wounded off that bridge, under fire and one at a time. After the bulge he marched through Luxemburg, Belgium, and as far as the Sarr before he was evacuated to a hospital for trench foot and dysentery. Most of his upper intestine was removed to save his life and he was still in the hospital when the war ended.
Upon his return to the States he worked on the family farm and by 1950 had inherited 1100 acres of it. In 1952 he gave the farm to his younger brother but kept the mineral rights and moved to Stevensville MT w/his wife, 3 children and "Auntie". During this time he worked at a nearby gypsum mine and traveled the country working on huge infrastructure projects. In 1959 he sold the farm in Stevensville and moved to California. Between 1959 and 1964 he became a grandparent 8 times. He worked as a Union millwright until his retirement and did everything he could to help his children find success. He had a dehabilitating heart attack in 1976 while helping his son stack a roof and was forced into full retirement. His later years were filled photography and dark-room developing,.. and concern for his grandkids welfare. I wish I could say his latter years were peaceful but they were not. His children adopted the most extreme aspects of the 1960's California cultural revolutions and were in constant strife. He left his entire estate to his grandkids with his wife in agreement. Whenever I hear references to the "Great Generation" I think of him and my grandmother.
