I remember Dr. Michael Madeloff as the epitome of a caring and compassionate physician. My family began seeing him in the early 1960's, and when I was around 7 years of age, Dr. Madeloff determined that my chronic upper respiratory infections, tonsillitis, etc., required the removal of my tonsils and adenoids. He explained to my parents and to me the surgery that would be performed, and he scheduled it for the very next Saturday morning at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda Maryland.

My parents checked me into the hospital that Saturday, and when it was time for me to head to the operating room, they naturally had to stop at the double doors of the surgical suite, and as a young boy facing the unknown, I found myself surrounded by strangers, all of them wearing surgical masks and caps, and I confess to be terrified, UNTIL: one of those strangers came up to me, he briefly pulled down his face mask, and it was Dr. Madeloff, smiling and telling me he would be there the whole time, and that I was going to be fine.

That reassured me in ways that cannot describe even now, Dr. Madeloff was not an actual surgeon, and he didn't even have to be there, he could have been out on the golf course or something, enjoying his weekend, but he thought it more important that he be at the hospital to reassure his young patient. I loved him for that, and I miss that dear man even now, 50 years later.

There is no doubt in my mind that Dr. Michael Madeloff was heartily welcomed into the practice of that Great Physician up above us all.

Dr. Madeloff was the finest doctor I ever knew.
