History
The Magpayo history traces its roots from the "Tagalogs" of central Luzon in the Philippines during the Spanish Colonial ages. Historically, the early settlers of the Magpayo clan come from the province of Bulacan and Pampanga.
The earliest documents tracing the Magpayo Family are from 1630 during the construction of the Barasoain Church in Malolos Bulacan, a national landmark. Local histrorians account that Barasoin was constructed by Agustinian Missionaries in 1859. The term "Barasoain" was derived from a place in Spain. The missionaries found the place in Malolos of striking similarity to Spain. When the Spanish-Filipino revolution broke-out, revolutionaries coined the term "baras ng suwail", which means "dungeon of the defiant".
In 1884, during the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Carmel (Nuestra Señora del Carmen), Patroness of the Parish, the temporary church was burned. The following year, Rev. Fr. Juan Giron, O.S.A., supervised the reconstruction of the now famous Church of Barasoain, with Miguel Magpayo, the contractor and builder of the church, with roots that trace from the Katipuneros of Bulacan. As it stands today, the surname is engarved on the church main door.

Name Origin
Based on the local vernacular or lingua franca the word Magpayo was derived from the verb "payo" English Definition: (verb) to advise or to counsel. While the Active Verb: magpayo means to give counsel. During the pre-spanish times naming "katutubo's" " locals" was patronymic, descriptive and concise. This means every personal name was taken from the name of a father, a grandfather, or their male ancestors adding a description of their physical appearance, prowess, occupation, ethnicity, habits or events which could be the origin of the Magpayo Family Heritage.
During the Spanish Occupation a decree on naming local inhabitants of the Philippines was formed and was called Claveria's Decree of 1849 - On Filipino Surnames. However, keynotes by local historians from Malolos, Bulacan stated that the Magpayo lineage were active tradesmen whose position during the spanish colonial rule and were often times consulted by the governor and clergy (as such the case with the construction of Barasoain Church in 1885) ommitting the Claveria Decree altogether.
