The origin of the surname Makarun is Sicily, where there are several variations of the surname Makarun - for example. Maccarone, Margarona, Marron, Caron, Mazzarone, and Carone. There is a place in Sicily, Mazzarrone, which is 157 Km. distant from Agrigento, 128 Km. from Caltanissetta, and 88 Km. from Catania . According to scholars, the name Mazzarone derives from the Greek term Marktorion, that means "impasto" (dough, mixture). According to others, it derives from the Arab etymology Makar, that means "felice" (happy). The first inhabited center was founded by the Count of Mazzarone, who then bestowed it to the Monastery of the nearby town of San Pietro Clarenza.
Mazzarrone, the place, experienced two major natural calamities: a 1669's eruption, and 1693's earthquake, nevertheless in year 965 , the Arabs conquered Sicily and this is when the first migration probably occurred. The second direction is related to the islands of the Adriatic coast (island Pagus - today Pag), and in Istria and Croatia today, known as former empire of Hapsburgs. It is this second line of movement that went deeper into the Austro-Hungarian Empire, where the family mixed with the Slavic population of Serbs and Croats and led to the present form of the surname Mazzarrone, in fact the surname Makarun.
So today, there are about 150 people in Croatia with the surname Makarun, who identify themselves as Croats, and smaller part of about 50 people who identify themselves as Serbs. This last group (50 people) did not stay in Croatia because of the persecution of Serbs and other ethnic groups during the 1991-1995 civil war. When they were expelled from Croatia, they moved into European countries (Serbia) and America , not knowing the fact that they are actually all Sicilians, and before that the ancient Greeks .
