After the a century of service as the head priest, the ancestors of the gangapadhaya family shifted their role as ministers of finanace of the maharaja. In those days the the tax ministry ofice was known as malkhana. 
Arond the year 17 th century under the patronage of Kirtichand Rai (1675–1696). The family was gifted the surname of Malkahndi. From then on the family increased and many son chnge their sirnames after the battle of plassey, after taxation went under the East India Company.
