Unlike most names from the area, it does not have a clear meaning in breton. It appears more likely that this name is derived from the early gaelic "Mael Coluimb".
The later gaelic is Maol Chaluim.
Between 1189 and 1214, the spelling Malcholom occurs, between 1247 and 1264 the name Malcolm IV is recorded. The name Malcolm I appears as Maelcolaim. The full form Maolchaluim for modern Malcolm of Calum (Callum) was is use in the 17th century but gave way to many different forms. The breton variant Mallegoll is comparatively modern. The present gaelic form of Malcolm is Maccalum.

The early gaelic "Mael Coluimb" means "follower of Columba. Columba is the name of the saint referred to being St Columba Iona.
