Famous People named Manware
Luigi Guerreggiante is an important historical figure and is a distant relative of the Guerreggiante/ Manware Family. In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi (Italy’s George Washington) and his army of volunteers, The Redshirts, were advancing north after capturing Sicily in the famous “Expedition of the Thousand.”
On August 18, 1860, the people of Basilicata rose up against their government in support of Garibaldi. My Italian patriot ancestor, Luigi Guerreggiante, was one of those who gave his life for the unification of Italy. As some of you might know the family name “Manware” was Guerreggiante and legally changed by a branch of the family in the United States to the literal translation “Man of War,” thus Manware. Which is appropriate for the origins of this family name, War Makers.
Italy was officially proclaimed as a country on March 17, 1861, reuniting the Italian people for the first time since the fall of the Roman Empire almost 1,400 years before.
Luigi Guerreggiante’s contribution was significant enough that a plaque bears his name which is displayed on the Municipio Basilicata in Potenza, Italy today along with other Italian Patriots who played a major role and gave their lives for the unification of Italy
