The meaning and origin of the name remains contentious. The family oral tradition (on my mother's side) was that the original name was 'Mansie' and this was changed to Manzie 'to make it sound more Scottish.'

I have traced the name back to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders around 1700 when parish records show it was changed from Mansie to Manzie. Kirk Yetholm was famously the 'Gypsy Capital' of Scotland, so the name may be Romany in origin.
