Summary

My name is Kevin Franklin and I am the Historian for the Town of Colonie, N.Y. I am seeking information on the Jefferson Mayell family. Jefferson Mayell was the President of the Albany, N.Y. Young Men's Christian Anti-Slavery Society during the early 19th Century. His parents came from England in the 1790's. Jefferson and family resided in the old Town of Greenbush, in a part annexed by the City of Rensselaer south of Present Day Fort Crailo. His home no longer stands. Jefferson Mayell owned land in what became part of the original Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. where he and many members of his family are buried. He lived during the period of photography, but I have been unable to locate a photograph of him or any of his immediate family. Jefferson Mayell died on July 5, 1892. He was 87 yrs. 5mo. of age. His name also appears as owning land in the Sand Lake area of Rensselaer County and the Ballston Spa area of Saratoga County. It appears that Mayell was deeply involved in the Underground Railroad movement of the 19th Century. Jefferson's father was listed as being a "hatter" or maker of hats in Albany, N.Y. in the 1790's. Any information regarding Jefferson Mayell or family descendants, immediate or next of kin would be deeply appreciated. Some members of the old Mayell line may have changed their last name to "Male" as evidenced by the Male family plot in the Niskayuna Reformed Church cemetery, Niskayuna, N.Y. Older graves last names read "Mayell". I may be reached at: [contact link] Thanks!

I have been researching the family of a man named Jefferson Mayell, who lived and died in the City of Rensselaer, N.Y. Jefferson Mayell died at Rensselear,(Greenbush), N.Y. on July 5, 1892. He was 87years and 5 months old when he died. He was the son of William Mayell, born in London England in about 1772 and was listed as a "hatter" at Albany, N.Y. as early as 1795. Jefferson Mayell was associated with the anti-slavery movement in the Albany, N.Y. area during the early to mid 19th Century. At one point he was President of the Albany Young Men's Anti Slavery Society and a member of the Albany Vigilance Committee, according to Munsells "Annals of Albany 1851". Jefferson had several children including six daughters and four sons. One son, William, married a woman named Amamda. William & Amamda had at least two male children named Harry (b 1864) who was listed as a pilot of a steam boat in the Brooklyn, N.Y. area in 1800 and 1900 Census records. Harry had two male children, Harry (Jr)born in 1895, and Thomas, born in 1899. Thomas may have lived in the Pompano Beach, Fl. area, but this is not confirmed. Accordint to Internet sources, there is a Thomas Mayell, born in 1899, who died at Pompano Beach, Florida at age 80 in 1979 and is buried in the Pompano Beach, Fl. cemetery there. I belive that Jefferson Mayell was associated with the Underground Railroad helping to move escaped slaves to Canada as he is listed as owning several properties along prominent roadways and turnpikes leading out of Albany, N.Y. during the 1830's & 40's. He is also listed as having lived at Ballston, N.Y. (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) during the mid 19th Century. Ballston was a known route of the Underground Railroad. I would be extremely interested in contacting any surviving descendants of the Jefferson Mayell family line and further documenting any role he may have played with the Underground Railroad. I have run into several dead end leads concerning this family. Any help would be appreciated. I have additional information on file from the records of the Albany Rural Cemetery which may be useful. Kindly contact Kevin Franklin, Historian, Town of Colonie, N.Y. should you be able to help. Thanks Very Much.
