Col. John McGavock
The Battle of Franklin happened to take place on the Carnton Plantation, which was the property of Col. John McGavock and his wife. He allowed the bodies of the dead Confederates to remain and be buried there in temporary graves with their temporary markers. Then he decided to donate two acres of his land adjoining the McGavock family burial grounds toward the creation of a private Confederate cemetery honoring those dead. Eventually, the bodies were reinterred there with their permanent markers according to the states, regiments, and companies they served. The Union, family and friends removed the bodies of their dead for burial in other private and national cemeteries.

Mrs. John (Caroline Winder) McGavock, Col.
Mrs. John (Caroline Winder) McGavock had her home turned into a hospital and helped the doctors and others tend to the wounded in the Battle of Franklin of Nov 30, 1864, who lay in her home, on her porches, in her yard, etc. She also copied for posterity, the record of each soldier found on his initial wooden tombstone marker. Their descendants thank her for this.

McGavock Confederate Cemetery Photo A
This picture has a closer view of the home that belonged to Colonel John McGavock and his wife, that became a hospital during and after the Battle of Franklin which took place on their property, part of which Col. McGavock later decided to donate for a private cemetery for the purposes of a proper burial place for the Confederate soldiers who died here. I wish to thank Tim Burgess for sending me all these pictures (except for the last four which were sent to me by Mrs. Maynard Hall, whom I also wish to thank).
Not only am I grateful to Tim Burgess for the pictures but for the information I needed that led me to establish that my husband's great grandfather's brother, Col. Wm Harry Bishop, was indeed buried here. Tim has been working on a book for many years about the soldiers who fought the Battle of Franklin, and was able to use the information I provided him about Col. Bishop's birth family. I also wish to thank David Fraley and Thomas Cartwright who worked at the Carter House Museum in Franklin, TN for their initial help. I understand that efforts are underway to eventually replace the Colonel's tombstone with one more fitting his part in the Civil War and finally at the Battle of Franklin.

A little booklet entitled "McGavock Confederate Cemetery, Franklin, Tennessee" contains pictures of Col. and Mrs. John McGavock, a few pictures of the cemetery, and a list of all the soldiers buried at the cemetery by their location according to the states they served, and with their company and regiment numbers. It is available for $5.95 by writing to The Carnton Plantation, 1345 Carnton Lane, Franklin, TN 37964. Their phone number is 615-794-0903, which you might wish to use to check on the price of the booklet before you send a check. I received permission from Mrs. Maynard (Frances) Hall, President of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Chapter 14, Franklin, TN to put my alphabetized list of these soldiers online based upon the list in the booklet. My list may be found at and also on Noel Matthews's Williamson County - TnGenWeb site at .

The land where the Battle of Franklin took place was on land belonging to Col. John McGavock and his wife. The home seen in the distance in this photo was their home, Carnton. Doctors set up a hospital in her home and with help, the Colonel's wife, Caroline (Winder)McGavock cared for the wounded in and around her home, on its porches, in the yards, etc. Those that died were buried with simple wooden markers giving their name, company and regiment. Mrs. McGavock later copied these records by hand and kept them for posterity. During the winter, some markers were stolen for kindling wood and others became illegible, so Col. McGavock decided to donate 2 acres of his land adjoining his family burial grounds for the proper burial of the Confederate soldiers. In time, they were reinterred and better markers were installed for each soldier. The union soldiers had been buried in trenches where they fell, and they were later removed to other cemeteries, both private and federal, by relatives, friends, and the federal government.

The Carnton Home can be seen in the distance. It belonged to Col. and Mrs. John McGavock. It was on their plantation that the costly Battle of Franklin took place on November 30, 1864, and that the creation of the private McGavock Confederate Cemetery came about.
