NICHOLAS McGLASHAN
Memorial services for Nicholas "Nick' McGlashan, 91, a Bering Sea fisherman and seaman, are pending at the Russian Orthodox church in Akutan.
Born July 26, 1896, he died Thursday, May 19, at the Alaska Native Hospital in Anchorage after a lengthy illness.
Mr. McGlashan was born to Scot and Aleut parents in a family of 13 children at Akutan Island, the last active U.S. whaling station. He began his life as a seafarer at 17, working on mailboats between Seward, the Aleutian Islands and the Pribilof Islands. During the summer he fished in Bristol Bay. During World War II he served as a mate on Army transport ships between the West Coast and Alaska. After the war he served as a process foreman aboard "The Deep Sea," a crab fishing and processing ship that pioneered the crab fishing industry in Alaskan waters and the Bering Sea.
He was an active ham radio operator for many years. In 1935 he won a national contest in the use of Morse code.
He is survived by his brother, Aleck McGlashan, of Anacortes, Wash.; his sister, Agnes Yeazel, of San Leandro, Calif.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara; his son, Christopher, and daughter, Mary.
