One story is that due to local antisemitic persecution, two Mirvis brothers in Holland in the 13th or 14th century left on separate boats, one going west (to England), the other east (to Lithuania and/or Italy). The Lithuanian families have the surname Mirvis because
that was the surname in Holland. The English family is said to have intermarried and disappeared.
Another tale says that Marco Polo was preparing to travel to the far East, heard of a Jewish family named Mirvis from Delft, Holland that manufactured a good grade of china, and wanted to take the china east for trading purposes. This family prospered and subsequently left Holland after persecution began there, ending up in Lithuania.
No one really knows which story is ture but it is interesting that both begin in Holland. There are other theories that the surname might have come from the name of one or another village in Eastern Europe, or possibly from a local wealthy landowner in Lithuania of similar name to whom the local Jews were tied in some way.
