History

The origin of the Mozzarelli family is from Mantova, in the region of Lombardy, Italy.
After the second world war one member of the family, brother of Anselmo Mozzarelli emigrated to Argentina and started there a new family branch whilst Anselmo moved to Milan, Italy that now counts a number of Mozzarelli family members.

Name Origin

The origin of the name is from the North East of Italy that was under the Austro-Hungaric empire domination. After the Austro-Hungaric were fought back into their borders North of the Alps, a process of re-Italianization began, erasing any possible sign that the Austro-Hungarians had been there, starting with places and people's names.
Several Austrian surnames have Mozar- prefix and include the "ozar, ozer" combination. Since the diffusion of the surname is relatively low and limited to the North East of Italy we can speculate that Mozzarelli might be the Italianization of an originally Austrian surname.
The above theory can explain why there aren't any ties with families bearing Mazzarella or Mazzarelli, that are geographically and genealogically separated Southern Italian variations of the surname.
