Thomas was a colourful character. He came to Victoria from Sth Australia 22 Jan 1861,per the schooner "Aldinga " was mining at Peg Leg nr Bendigo married Emily Boyes in Bendigo 14 Oct 1861 , thir first child Thomas Jnr was born in Bendigo in 1862, the family returned to Sth Australia where they had 3 daughters, Elizabeth Ann, born 1864 at Bowden , Emily Jane born 8 Nov 1965 at Moonta, died 17 dec 1866 at Yelta, Louisa born 6 dec 1867 at Port Wallaroo,. In April of 1868 Emily and her 3 children were at the mercy of the relief board as Thomas had left Sth Australia to find work, supposedly in Newcastle NSW But as Emily hah had ro re[lies from her letters to him, she survived with the little help from the Destitute Board, Thomas had crossed the NSW boaeder and was in the mining area of Peak Downs in Queensland by Jan of 1868, then he appears in Charters Towers , Queensland. Emily and children are still in the Wallaroo area in 1869 thru to 1875. With no word from her husband it is fair to say Emily thought he was deceased. On the 21 Sep 1870 Emily marries Charles Hooker (1832 - 1905 ) at Moonta Sth Australia, they had 3 children, George born 1870, Wallaroo, Sarah 1872 -died 1873 at Wallaroo, Sarah Ann b1875 Wallaroo, and Ethela "Amy" b1878 Port Lincorn Sth Australia. In the meantime Thomas Snr. is busy with another partner Mary Ann nee Price (1853- 1927 ) a daughter was born to them 22 Nov 1873,in Queensland , Isabella Ada Mary Eleanor, i could not find a marriage for Thomas to Mary Ann Price. The union was short lived as Mary Ann is back in Melbourne ,Victoria by March 1874 when she places her daughter Isabella 16 mths in a children's home, the child is listed as neglected, and that the father is deceased! Three yrs later Mary Ann gives birth to a second daughter, Emily "Frances " on 24 Dec 1877, the child is registered under the name Mufford?, four mths later Mary Ann travels to Sth Australia to marry her cousin David Lewis (1849- 1939 ) The plot thickens when Thomas Snr appears in Sydney NSW, listed as a slot machine operator, travelling to major cities and country agricultural shows. He married Sarah Sophie Coles (1866 - 1956 ) in Sydney in 1896,( ref 6638 ) Sarah had been an inmate at the same home in Melbourne with Isabella, his daughter with Mary Ann Price! Thomas and Sophie had two children, James (b1898 Sydney NSW- K.I.A. WW1 1918) Mary Ann ( b 1899 Sydney 1959 Victoria ) sadly i have found no trace of Isabella, she was fostered out to a Mrs. Catherine Cox of St Kilda until the age of 18 yrs. When Thomas Snr died in Fitzroy in 1916, the newspaper death notice states his wife is Emily nee Boyes and lists the children, Thomas Jnr ( who was also thought to be deceased at the time , Elizabeth Ann (Mrs Nankervis ) Louisa ( Mrs Harris )
Mary Ann (Mrs Bartlett ) and James. Another twist to this story is that Emily nee Boyes had taken up with Christopher Hutchinson ( 1841- 1921 ) in Sth Australia, they had six children together, obviosley by then Emily knew Thomas Snr was still living, they were not marroed until a few weeks after Thomas Snr died in 1916. Sarah remarried in 1924 to her foster father , twice widowed ,Frederick Goldsmith, who died in 1927. His second wife had been foster mother to Sarah.
Death certificate for Thomas Snr 1916 is deceiving as it makes no mention of his marriage to Sarah Sophie Coles, but lists the children to Emily Boyes and Sarah Coles, the informant is Frederick Charles Bartlett, husband of Mary Ann Mufford, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Sophie Coles!
