Murdison Family History & Genealogy

History

From working along the river Tweed as shepherds/farmers some Murdisons moved into weaving. Later some moved to Glasgow via Cambuslang, others to Edinburgh. Subsequently, one Murdison moved to London; another to the Midlands (of the U.K.).
Finally, one Murdison emigrated to Australia; one to the U.S.A. and one to Canada via the U.S.A. Post WW2 from Glasgow, an aunt and an uncle from my family emigrated to Canada.

Name Origin

There appear to be 3 potential sources of the name all in Scotland.
1) The lands of Murdochstoune (i.e. Murdoch's town) in the Borders, near the Tweed. "the heiress of Murdochstoune married into the Scott family"
2) There are small farms called Murdiston between Stirling and Callander and old records mentioning people from Perth called Murdison
3) There's a book reference to McMurdie being the original form of Murdison (with little evidence). The village/hamlet of McMurdieston near Greenock and the south-west of Scotland is mentioned to support this. There is today a reservoir in Greenock with the same or similar name.

From above it's clear the name is most likely to be of southern Scottish origin

Famous People named Murdison

John Murdison was a famous early supporter of Copernicus's idea that the earth went round the sun (and not the other way round!) at the Uni of Leiden in Holland.
Andrew "Drew" Murdison (known as the flying Scotsman!) was a very successful rugby union player for Galashiels (in the Scottish Borders) and subsequently rugby league for Halifax (he has his own cigarette card).
