John Alexander Murtie was born on January 1, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Scottish parents, John Murtie (1894-1975) and Isabelle Anderson (1898-1975). He grew up with six siblings, including John, Margaret, Mary, Jessie, Clem, and Alexander Murtie. During his childhood, he moved with his family to Renton, Scotland, where he attended St. Patrick's High School in Dunbarton, Scotland. Upon completing his studies, he returned to the United States and served in the U.S. Army from 1946 until 1949. Following his military service, Mr. Murtie resided in Detroit, Michigan, until 1953, when he returned to Scotland to attend Sherry's College in Glasgow. After completing his studies, he returned to the United States and settled in Yonkers, New York, where he started his own family. In Yonkers, he married Margaret Bradley (1936-2013) on June 5, 1954, and the couple went on to have children.
