There are many Norlings in Sweden as in Norway and in GB and in the USA. There can be relations but that is not sure. Axel Norling is found in one special branch of the big Norlin-tree, (if there is one...)

Name Origin

Axel Norling was born 1839, on December 9th (not 1840!) He became the father of 10 children. His father Thore Norling and his grandfather Swen Norling are, so far, the earliest relatives in that branch that used the name Norling. So far the meaning is unclear but much tells us that the meaning is "someone who came from the northern provinces".

Spellings & Pronunciations

This name should not be mixed up with Nordling, which is quite another name.

Nationality & Ethnicity

Axel Norling was born in a little place called Fuxerna (today Lilla Edet) in Sweden. Axels father Thore moved to Fuxerna from the southern part of the Province Bohuslän. There can be two or three reasons why Axel was thought to be a norweigian. First, he moved to Norway when he was 20 years of age, he married there and he got five children there. But 1870 or 1871 he moved back to Sweden together with his growing family. They moved to Göteborg(Gothenburg) and after some years they moved again, now southwards, to Helsingborg. The second reason; some people think that the name indicates that he was of Norwegian origin. Other, third, think that t means coming from a little place in Bohuslän called Norum.

Axel Norling was my grand grand grandfather! I am working with our genealogy. Other Norlings to be recognized are Axel Norling, a Swedish gymnast from the early 20th century. Axels sons were all of them machinists. My grandfather Carl Oscar Norling was sunk by a german submarine during the WWI, 1917.
