This is my maternal grandmother (Nonnie). She lived a few blocks from us with my Uncle Louie (Teta) on Gharkey St in Santa Cruz. Great house and huge yard 2 blocks from West Cliff Dr. She had come to America at 18 with her new husband by ship, 2 months at sea and landed at Ellis Island. I remember her telling us that the inspectors looked you over like you were cattle, and praying to pass inspection to get off the island. She would say that on the boat coming over it was a long, scary trip but once in New York harbor everyone came on deck to see the Statue of Liberty, and cried because they knew they had made it and wouldn't die at sea. They came across country, by train, to San Fransisco. They lived over a fire station on McArther. My grandfather (Nonno) was a fisherman. Nonnie was pregnant with their 1st child when the 1906 earthquake hit. She said at first she thought the horse drawn fire wagons going out was causing the building to shake, but quickly found out otherwise. My Nono was able to commandeer a fishing boat and made several trips ferrying people to Sausalito to get them out of the city and the fire. They migrated down the coast to Santa Cruz where there was a population of other Italians from Riva Tregoso.
She never got her American citizenship, never being fluent in English.
I remember Nonnie being an excellent cook. My family ate dinner at her house every night except the weekend. I grew up eating ciopino, bacala, every kind of pasta, risotto and polenta imaginable and at holidays ravioli. She made it all with ease. She always had a huge garden, kept chickens and had a fig and Myers lemon tree in the yard.
Nonnie could understand quite a bit of English but would always tell us she couldn't understand us "Parla Italiana" so we would learn Italian . She was very proud of her heritage, but very proud to live in America where her children had a better chance.
