My G-Grandfather, Lorenzo Pizzirusso came from Sant' Angelo dei Lombardi in Italy to Clyde, Wayne County NY. Many people from that area came to Clyde. NY and they had a unique language characteristic that still exists there today where they do not pronounce that last vowel. (More on this) Lorenzo married Carmella Palumbo (in US) and they had 10 children, one of which is my Grandfather Tony (b. 1899 Antonio).
In common use....Pizzirusso was pronounced as phonetic Pitzeruse. All of the children used the name Pitzeruse. One brother (Francis/Frank) who served in WWI in the USA changed his name to Pettis but that is the outlier.
In the St John RC Cemetery in Clyde, you will see both names and they are all related back in Italy but it seems the generation born 1899 - 2020 adopted Pitzeruse.
Back to the last vowel, it would be dropped. Ex: Cimmineri was pronounced Chimmin (air)..Chim-in-air but everyone knew who it really was and the name of course spelled correctly on legal documents.
The name meaning: Many people tried to tell the family the name derived from "Red Pizza" but all the family very vehemently spoke against this. In summer 2022, I was a visiting professor in Italy and was able to speak with some locals about this. They too said "red-pizza" reference was totally wrong. They told me the name means "Peak"..as in a mountain or high hill top. Perhaps the red is a volcano tip? I hope this commentary adds to the body of knowledge our our unique name.
