Early Posnjakovas

These are the earliest records we have of the Posnjakova family.

The Biz. Fairfield. N.S.W. 4th December 1957. FAMILY REUNION. FINE OFFICIAL TEAMWORK. The full story of how the Resettlement Department of the World Council of Churches, the Red Cross and the Australian Government, working together were able to bring 64 years old Mrs. Zinaida Posnjakow to Australia to rejoin her family, will probably never be told. But it is this case which has caused Miss Elsie Needham, Deputy Director of the Resettlement Department, to say: "It is successes such as this that transform work into a dedication, and even if we were to fail in everything else, this reunion would be enough to justify our work." In 1941 Mr. and Mrs. Posnjakow were living contentedly together with their unmarried daughter in a small town in Estonian: but early that year the husband was arrested by the U.S.S.R. police, never to be heard from again by his family. Three months later Mrs. Posnjakow and her daughter were deported to Siberia to work in a labour camp. The daughter did not survive. For twelve years Mrs. Posnjakow worked until she became too ill to carry out the work she had been compelled to do. For four more years she was in an invalid home. A married daughter, Mrs. Galina Magi, who was living in a different part of Estonian with her husband, had not been deported, and fled with him when the U.S.S.R. Army was re-occupying the Baltic in 1944. Together with her husband, a four year old son and a six months-old daughter, they crossed into Northern Germany, but the baby did not survive. After four years in a German camp for displaced persons the family found freedom in Australia.
