Name Origin

Near Ludwighoffen a small city, south of Heidelberg Germany is the river Quall. Therefore, the name Quallich comes from "the people of the River Quall".

Nationality & Ethnicity

Originally Quallichs came from Germany, but most immigrated to what is now Slovakia to a village called Medzenseifen. Today it is called Medzev. They were metal workers and immigrated at the request of the king to develop his eastern empire. In 1049, 40 families were requested to move from Ludwighoffen to the area and were given land rights in the area. The original written document is now in the History Museum in Budapest. I can only remember a few names on the document: Quallich, Stark, Froehlich, Gedeon, etc... At the time, the region was a part of the Austo-Hungarian empire. Through centuries they have maintained their German Heritage, but after many years, a special dialect has developed called Montagish. There is a paper written on the dialect at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

During the second half of the 1800s, many people immigrated to America from Medzenseifen. The village was too small to support the large population. Most settled in Pittsburgh and Cleveland because of the steel mills and mining.
