I met Jinna while working at Gerlands at Spencer and Underwood in 1996, right after my junior year at LaPorte high school ended. I was a shelf stocker and she worked in the customer service booth. She was quiet and shy but very sweet and wow was she beautiful. I would flirt with her while she was in the booth until a manager ran me off. Eventually I got up the nerve to ask for her number...I was so excited when she gave it to me. I remember thinking that she was the most beautiful girl whose number I had ever gotten. We got to be pretty good friends - I went over to her house a few times, we went rollerblading, and she gave me a Mazzy Star CD that I still have. I still think of her every time I hear "Fade Into You". I even convinced her to sneak out of the house once to go hang out at a friend's house. I kinda feel bad about that one because she got a little drunk and I think her parents caught her trying to sneak back into the house through a window. Sorry Jinna! One day we went into downtown Houston looking for underground tunnels that we had heard about but had no idea the actual whereabouts of. We tried to ask for directions and were completely ignored by literally every single business suit we spoke to. We thought it was hilarious.
We hung out all summer, but some time before school started she and her family moved to Galveston and I never saw or heard from her again. I had no idea how to reach her - cell phones were not common yet and the internet consisted of AOL chat rooms. It wasn't until several months after her death, possibly even more than a year after, that someone told me she had died - someone that knew we were close at once time, and chose not to tell me the truth about what happened. I didn't find that out until years later when I had been thinking about her and decided to look up what info I could find, just like I did when I found this place. I was devastated...it still hurts to think about. I can't help but wonder if things would have turned out differently if we could have kept in touch. Maybe she just needed a friend. I miss you Jinna.
