Reijo is a Finnish man's first name. It is a variant of the Latin Gregorius and (still) Greek Gregory, the meaning of which is "watchful". Reijo's name day is the 12th of March, Pope Gregory I's anniversary. The name Reijo is a judiciously edited form of Reko Gregory, who was seen as "difficult to bend."
 
In the Nordic countries in general, it is common to incorporate the name of the father into a surname (ie, Matti ,Juhani's Son).  Even today, in Finland, some people use a first name as a surname. Last names are often born from the father's name, place of residence, or occupation.

 
Finnish first forced last name law was carry out  in the beginning of 1921. This law stipulated that  Finnish citizens who did not have the last name must take one.

 
Last name Reijo is from Finnish Karelians. Karelian territory was given to soviets in WW2. Finnish citicens were evacuatedd from their homes.
