According to Polish Genealogical Society of America, A typical Kashubian name. The word “rek” in Kashub means “cancer” or “crab”. The word for “crab” and “cancer” in classical Polish is “rak”, hence Rakowski is a classical Polish (non-Kashub) name. There is a Rekowo Lake in Kashub, Poland, Rekowo village, Dolne Rekowo and GÑrne Rekowo. So Rekowski seem to be all over and particularly so in the BytÑw region, in the village of Rekowo. Many Rekowski names in that district have przydomeks like Wantoch-Rekowski (of Rekowo), Wrycz-Rekowski and the famous Styp-Rekowski. Elsewhere it’s plain Rekowskis.

Famous People named Rekowicz

According to the Polish Genealogical Society of America: The Wilno, Barry’s Bay Rekowskis hailed from Kalisz in the parish of Lipusz. There are numerous Recoskis in Barry’s Bay, Wilno, Round Lake. In the Renfrew area they have retained their “Rekowski” spelling. There are 9 Rekowski at least in the Stevens Point, Polonia phone book (also Rajkowskis?). None in Winona directories at present, but a few Rekowski tombstones in Winona and in Pine Creek, Wisconsin.
