How easily the generations slip away. My grandmother is a dim memory to me. If their stories are not shared, our ancestors become faceless nonentities to future generations. I received my middle name after Grandma Maltzen, and even though it was misspelled by nurses, I consider it to be Margaretha, not plain Jane American "margaret."
Though I have yet to find the entry record for Margaretha's emigration, I believe she was born in Germany (West Prussia). With her husband, Hinrich (Henry) Maltzen, she raised eight children in the SW corner of Minnesota, Sioux Valley Township. They relocated to Davenport, IA at one point, but soon returned to MN. Grandpa literally broke virgin prairie land there and owned two farms. He built "gingerbread" houses for not only himself, but many neighbors.
Grandma Maltzen is one of my earliest memories. A small silver-haired lady in her late '80's at the time, she still loved to garden. Brightly-hued flowers permeated her garden and I would wonder at the marvelous array as I wandered those carefully tended beds. While Grandma had the strength to work with the flowers, her "choppers" no longer had the ability to handle harder foods. I remember learning to scrape an apple with the edge of a teaspoon to make fresh applesauce for Grandma.
As Grandma's memory in those earliest days begins to fade even more, I recall two boxes. To my adult eyes, I recognize them as foil covered candy boxes, but in the eyes of a child, they were magically beautiful...silver and light rose...so special, because they were gifts from Grandma.
Margaretha Repenning Maltzen died in 1948 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Lorenzo Hartman.
