Rienks is a 'patronymium', a fathers name. Before 1811, in the Netherlands, lots of people did not have a family name, their fathers name was added as a second name. In 1811 / 1812, during occupation by France (Napoleon), all inhabitants were obliged to register a surname. Three brothers, sons of Rienk Johannes, registered their last name as 'Rijnks', later changed to 'Rynks' and eventually almost all changed to the Dutch way of writing: 'Rienks'
