Early Rimiccis

These are the earliest records we have of the Rimicci family.

Mariano Rimicci, 100, a retired barber who had a shop in the Printer`s Row area, cut hair in Chicago for over 40 years. After working 7 days a week, 12 hours a day during the Depression, he cut hair for free for neighborhood children on the West Side. Mass for Mr. Rimicci, a resident of the Northwest Side, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, 5900 W. Barry Ave. He died Saturday at home. ``He always taught us respect for our elders,`` his daughter, Rena Luppino, said. ``He was 100 and I was 75, but I never talked back to him.`` Mr. Rimicci, a native of Palermo, Sicily, came to the United States at the age of 17 in 1902. He worked at first in the sugar cane fields near New Orleans and later for a railroad in the Chicago area. ``He had a friend who was a barber and decided he could earn a better living cutting hair,`` his daughter said. ``He went to barber school, but he was there only one week when a man came in and said you, `You cut hair good enough to do it in my shop` and hired him.`` For several years he cut hair for 7 days a week, 12 hours a day and earned $1.25 a day. He lived at the time on Polk Street between Sacramento and California Avenues. He offered free haircuts in his home and often would bring in a group of shaggy children off the street to cut their hair. ``I think everybody in our neighborhood got free haircuts off him,`` Luppino said. Mr. Rimicci purchased his own barber shop at 534 S. Dearborn St., where he numbered many of the print shop and print foundry employees of Printer`s Row as his customers. He retired in the late 1950s. ``He was a real conversationalist,`` according to his daughter. ``People called him `Mario` and would wait in line for a hour to have him cut their hair. He was a very nice man and pleasant. He used to tell us to smile and would say, `You`ll never get into trouble when you`re smiling.` `` Survivors, besides his daughter, include two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
