Since 1913, when my grandfather John Joseph (Rizk) came to America from Lebanon, we have maintained the last name of Joseph; however, the original last name is actually Rizk. Taken first-hand from my grandfather, when he entered Ellis Island in 1913, he was 18 years old and did not understand English. When he was asked his name, he replied "John"; when asked for another name, he replied "Joseph" (which was his father's first name); thus, he was entered into history as "Joseph" rather than "Rizk." He traveled with his cousin, Daibes Rizk, who maintained the last name of Rizk. **Back in those days in Lebanon, the father's first name was passed on to all their children as a middle name. Grandfather's full name would have been John Joseph Rizk. He was born September 29, 1895 in Baakata, Lebanon; he died on June 13, 1962 and buried in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas, under the name John Joseph.
