In the 1860s four Rubeli brothers - Jacob, Frederic, Abraham and Gottlieb - emigrated from Gampelen near Bern to Australia. They settled in the Nagambie area of Victoria and worked in the vineyards that were expanding there.

The word ruebli (double dot on the 'u') in Swiss-German means 'carrot'. Where there is 'li' at the end of a Swiss name it is a diminutive like 'ette' - so Rubeli might mean 'little carrot'!
