Nationality & Ethnicity

Catherina Schmidthurst was born in Prussia (Germany) in August, 1842. Came to the US in 1860. Married the same year to William Walther, also from Germany (Nassau). She has many descendants, of whom I am one (GG Granddaughter). The name is very uncommon both in the US and in Germany. When Catherine immigrated, she was supposed to meet a brother who lived in Cincinnati OH, but he didn't show up. She was taken in by a compassionate couple, and not long after met her husband-to-be, William Walther, in Brooklyn, NY.

I only have "met" other descendants of this one Schmidthurst, but I know there are some still in Ohio.

I have a photo of Catherina, sent via email by another descendant.
I have been DNA tested (full maternal sequence) and am H27 maternal Haplogroup. This is a unusual one, with a concentration in central, eastern, and Northern Europe. It has only recently been split off as a separate group, which means it could be of genealogical and ethnic-origin significance.

I'll try to post in another section of this site, but if you want to contact me directly, use

I put down some Schmidthurst information (about my GG Grandmother, Catherina Schmidthurst Walther, b April 1842 in Prussia, Germany. Should have posted it here, I see. Catherina immigrated to NYC in 1860, as a teenager. She was supposed to be met by a brother who was living in Cincinnati OH, but he never showed - at least till much later. She was taken in by a compassionate older couple, and not long afterward met another German (from Nassau, Germany) immigrant, William Walther, a piano maker by trade. They raised a family, mostly of daughters, in Brooklyn NY. There are many descendants.
There are said to be other Schmidthursts of those who went there from Germany, but I haven't yet connected with them. A woman with the surname Schmedthorst (probably the name from which Schmidthurst was derived, has contacted me, asking how my line connects with those in Ohio. I do not know, but suspect they are descendants of one or more of Catherina's close family members.

One interesting fact: I have been tested (full maternal DNA) with Family tree DNA and belong to the rare genotype H27 (rare both in Europe where it is most prevalent, as well as in the US). Since this mitochondrial DNA is passed on virtually without change, only through the female line, this implies that Catherina Schmidthurst was also H 27, as was her daughter and her granddaughter (my maternal grandmother) and my mother. Likewise, anyone else descended from Catherina strictly through a female line.

If only all known Schmidthursts/ Schmidthorsts / Schmedthorsts, or at least some of them could get DNA tested, we might be able to discover the specific area of origin.

Contact me at [contact link] if you'd like to do it privately (or want an email of a photo of Catherina, sent to me by another of his descendants.
