Name Origin

Origin Middle Europe.

Currently the name appears across Austria for example in the Tyrol region. There are actually several villages called Schwabegg in Austria and one called Zvabek on the border between Austria and Slovenia. Do not confuse with the area of Schwaben in Germany which may or may not be related.
We have traced one line of the Schwabegger family tree back ca. 200 years in Tyrol. The church records are nowadays scanned and available online but you need to know where to look as much of it is illegible and all is in Latin and written with the old alphabet.

We were also told that there was an Andreas and his wife Maria Barbara Schwabegger in Budapest-Felsovizivarosi in Hungary who church records showed got their child (also called Maria Barbara) baptised in 1729 (Hungary, Slovenia and Austria were all part of the Austro-Hungarian empire).

Going back further there was a noble family of Schwabeggs in South Germany that died out hundreds of years ago. The ruins of castle Haldenburg still exist in the town of Schwabegg near Augsburg Germany. We suspect that the name Schwabegger means that the forefathers were subjects of this noble family.
