History

Semrad name originates from Bohemia. Now Czech Republic . A farming family . They farmed wheat, alfalfa, and large gardens to can food for the family . They often were dairy farmers as well. Selling milk to local dairy distributors. They also farmed cattle, pigs, chickens, and geese. Always had several quarter horses on hand . In later years many of the sons that immigrated to the USA remained productive farmers. Others branched out into construction and home building. And other professions such as accountants, nurses, and physicians . The family were devout Catholics and some of the women served became nuns . One was a nun and nursing instructor.

Life revolves around the farming, church and family gathers as often as possible. With special emphasis on family gatherings especially during holidays that including church service celebrated together . Large family meals that included traditional Czech foods like kolache, kielbasa & kraut, jaternice , dumplings, and other Czech fav foods. Fun gatherings often included traditional dance of the Czech people, the polka and waltz . In the USA a few polka bands still book performances . Often wedding receptions include a live band for polka dancing.
