The family moved to Garden City Park, Long Island in March 1955. Ralph worked as a special design engineer for New York Bell Telephone for 35 years. In 1966, he invented the very first device that enabled the deaf and deaf-blind to communicate via telephone. He was pictured in the New York Times for his achievement. He retired around 1983, after which he and Margaret moved to Brick, New Jersey for the remainder of their lives. He died shortly before turning 82 years old from myeledysplasia, a relatively rare disorder in which the body stops producing blood. It is said to be caused by exposure to ultra high doses of radiation (like a bomb). Ralph was within 100 miles of Hiroshima when that bomb was dropped in WW2.
