Spellings & Pronunciations

Also, as seen above, I have the court order change in s[pelling from SIPOS to SHIPOSH, and known cousins were changed to SHEPOSH.  Depending on what the folks at Ellis Island heard, the names were changed per spelling.

Nationality & Ethnicity

My husbands famioly came from the czech area in the early 1900's.  The origianl name was SIPOS , pronounced SHE-POSH and was changed in Ellis Island.  I have the court papers to show that.  Some of their known family names were changed to SHEPOSH, as the folks in Ellis Island wrote down whatever they heard the name to be. As above, my husbands family came froman area in the Czech region, they were farmers.  I have the ships manifest where Grandpa came over in the early 1900s and also a court order of the name change.  I also have a copy of a baptismal certificate,written in the old language. I had it translated and the name of the city was Maly Brezsh or something similar.
