Name Origin

I have not identified many sites of origin. There are three surrounding York which was a Viking capital city. Skipton in Yorkshire was a corrupted one, and there must be one or more in the South West of England where the surname occurs relatively frequently. I have also identified one at Halliwell in Lancashire to be where my Shipton family originated.
If you find a 16th or 17th C. Shipton in London they possibly arrived as merchants in Lombard Street established as a wool trading centre by William the Conqueror some time after 1066 AD.
The name, Shipton, is a combination of two words, “Sceap” and “ton”. Sceap is the Old English word for “Sheep” and “ton” is an appendix indicating an enclosed area within which a small number of families were engaged in a co-operative venture. In other words, Shiptons were sheep farmers. It is possible that the spelling change occurred during the compilation of the Domesday Book around 1086/7 A.D. The appendix “ton” or “tun” survives today as “town” in the English language.

Spellings & Pronunciations

Viking settlers corrupted the spelling of Shipton to Skipton. The Old English spelling is Sceapton.
