During the Greek Revolution, a Nikolaos Sklias was one of Kolokotronis's under-chiefs that fought for the capture of the castle of Palamidi in Nafplion.
During WWII, an Alekos Sklias was a captain in the Resistance army ELAS in Messinia. He was murdered by a Nazi collaborator.
Name Origin
Sklias means "he who is well dressed, who takes care of his appearance, who is slick, well-mannered". Somewhat close to the definition of a gentleman in English.
The origin is not known, one plausible scenario could be that the Skliades were part of a small scale (town-level) aristocracy/early bourgeoisie.
