Leonard (Len/Lennie) Wheatley Sollas was a wonderful grandfather. I always enjoyed his visits, and our visits to see him. He always showed a keen interest in everything I was doing. Len was very fond of animals and rescued very many injured birds. One story he would tell me was about a bird with a broken wing, for whom he made a splint out of matchsticks and nursed it back to health. During World War I Len was in the Army, stationed in France. Although he never talked about this to me, I found out after his death that he had been in the trenches, where he and the other soldiers were so hungry they resorted to killing rats with their bayonets and eating them. Len was married to Ann Elizabeth (nee Glass) and they had their first child - my father, Alec - the year after the first world war ended. They then went on to have another son, Alan, three years later. Len became a widower in 1968 on the death of Ann, and continued to live in their cottage in Court Street, Tisbury, Wiltshire, until his own death in August 1977. Len is buried in a triple depth grave in the London Road Cemetery, Salisbury, along with his wife and youngest son, my Uncle Alan, who had very sadly died at the age of just 43 in 1965.

Alec was a wonderful father. Always full of wit and humour, he strived to make my early life enjoyable, memorable and happy. He was born in London to Leonard Wheatley Sollas and Ann Elizabeth (nee Glass). The family moved around the south of England and Alec attended Poole Grammar School. He was a mischievous boy who enjoyed chemistry (a rather dangerous combination!) and, amongst other rascally exploits, told stories of blowing up the school toilets with a potassium compound he’d made in the lab. At age 20 World War II broke out and Alec joined the British Army, where he taught his colleagues to drive and operate tanks. Following the war, Alec was briefly married to Elizabeth Evans but they had no children. During the 1950s Alec was working as a mechanic/salesman at Lopcombe Corner, Salisbury. By 1959 he was flat-sharing with a friend (who I believe was called John) in Salt Lane, Salisbury. Alec was by then working at Abbey Autos in Castle Street. In 1959 he also met his future wife (my mother), Eve Fisher, and conceived me in the September of that year. The family lived in Salisbury until 1978, at 42 St Francis Road, moving to Pine Mansions, Vale Road, Bournemouth in April 1978. On Alec and Eve’s retirement in 1984 they moved to my mother’s home county of Yorkshire and lived in Greenacres, Huntington. Alec enjoyed a good retirement, doing all the things he enjoyed - cycling, walking, gardening - until the late 1990s when he was very sadly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Alec died on 4 April 2001, aged nearly 82, and is buried in a double grave in York Cemetery, along with my mother who died three years later.
