CHARLES FREDERICH SOMMERKORN (SOMMERCORN)
1855 - 1946

A PROGENITOR
family history

by Helena Alvina Sommercorn Finnerty

When my grandfather, August Wilhelm Sommerkorn, and my grandmother, Dorothea Sophia (see Wartenberg in family record) Sommerkorn, came to America in 1856 my father was about nine months old and there were two older sisters (see family record). They traveled by way of an old freighter, my father has told me, which was about nine weeks coming to America. It was such an old vessel that it sprung a leak, and the water that poured in made it necessary to keep pumping the water out for about two weeks. During the nine weeks ocean voyage, smallpox (or Black Sea Pox my father called it) broke out amongst the passengers. At that time, there being no cure or prevention nor any way in which they could combat this dread disease, everyone on board was deathly afraid. The disease spread rapidly and the bodies of the dead were scarcely cold before they were thrown overboard into their watery grave of the deep. The situation was very grave and a search was made each day throughout the vessel for new victims. In fact, it was believed that some were thrown overboard even while life still lingered. My grandmother, fearing for the life of her baby, who had contacted the disease, became frightened. The child was so ill, he was as though dead, and was unable to cry or make a noise. When the searchers came near, with motherly instinct to protect her child, she hurriedly wrapped him into an old housewife apron, so as to look like a bundle of clothes. It was a great relief to her when he was overlooked and his life was spared. The baby passed the crisis, and later grew up to be a strong strapping youth with blue-gray eyes, and reddish, light brown hair.
The Sommerkorn family settled in Wisconsin and, though not religiously active, attended Lutheran Churches or those of German origin. They lived fairly well, being neither too poor, nor what one would have called well fixed at that time.
My father, taking the English way of spelling his name now went by the name of Fred, shortening the Frederich. He had very little schooling as schools were far from his home. Nine miles was a long way and roads were few and poor. If he had gone to school it would have been to the Lutheran school. He was still only a lad when his father died in 1869, which threw the burden of the household upon his shoulders for he was the only boy in the family.
As a boy, my father, Fred had plenty to do on the farm, such as milking cows, feeding the animals, chopping wood and other various chores. One day when he was chopping wood the axe slipped and seriously cut a gash in his leg.
As for social activities, the people lived too far apart to get together often, but when the boys of the area got together, they enjoyed skating, hiking, swimming, and the things most boys like to do in general. He sometimes went canoeing on the Crawfish River in Wisconsin and one day he saw a muskrat. He became so excited that he fell into the river.
When Fred was eighteen years old he had moved to Minnesota. He did not stay home very much any more. He felt that he wanted to get away into the world and make something of himself and left his home at an early age.

CHARLES FREDERICH SOMMERKORN (SOMMERCORN)
1855 - 1946

Some of his sisters, with whom I corresponded in my search for genealogy, wrote that they hadn't seen him since he was twelve years old. He became a self-made man, studying whenever he could in his spare time, and I have always admired him for his efficiency in whatever he undertook to do. He became an excellent penman, read fluently, learned mathematics, and became by trade a contractor and builder of excellent reputation. He supervised building projects as late as in his eighty-fifth year, when he himself was physically unable to labor as a carpenter.
Another accident he had when quite young (about 18 years old) was when he had been hauling cord wood with a team and bobsled. This sled hit a rock when going down a hill. There were chains on the bobsled to keep it from sliding down too fast but in hitting the rock it threw Fred out so that he fell between the horses. The sled passed over a part of his body but no serious damage resulted. When he was twenty-one, Fred went to Iowa (Ordway) where he worked for a time in a stone-quarry during the winter. In the spring he went to his Uncle, August Sommerkorn. That summer he did carpenter work and helped his Uncle on the farm.
At the age of twenty-two, Fred decided to work on the railroad and worked for five years on the Milwaukee, St. Paul Railroad under one boss. After that he worked for the Dakota and North-Western Railroad, doing general work such as building depots and bridges. When he worked for the Chicago, Milwaukee railroad in Jamesville, Wisconsin about 1874, one day the crew he was with were working on shimming the bridge over the Crawfish River, between Jamesville and Milwaukee. A huge chain had been placed around a rail to lift a cap off from posts. The men were prying and had just lifted up the ties and were shimming up the bridge, when a heavy freight train came along unexpectedly. A fellow worker named Fred Dimock was with Fred on the bridge when the boss sent a man out to flag the train and he told the men to quit and run for their lives. My father said "No, we can do it". All the men ran but Fred Dimock and my father, and they started to pry furiously with a lever and unfastened the chain, which surely would have caused a wreck had it been left fastened around the rail. The train was only a few yards from them when they finished, scarcely leaving time for them to drop down on the side of the track on the cap of the bridge or cross timber to prevent being sucked under the train and to save their lives. After the train had crossed the bridge, it stopped and the engineer and crewmen went to see if anyone was hurt. But before they could get to where my father and his friend Mr. Dimock were, another whistle was heard and a passenger train was seen rounding the curve. My father motioned to the passenger train coming and motioned to the freight train to move on in order to keep them from being rammed into, and to avoid a wreck. By this time a flagman had slowed down the passenger train and it stopped in time. Fred Dimock had on a long tailed coat and when he slid down on the bridge caps, and the freight train thundered past, it cut off his coat tails. The tails had fallen across the rails as he dropped down and he hadn't had time to draw them away. This was a very exciting and narrow escape.
While still a young man, my father had the ague Fever (acute fever, possibly Malaria) and was sick about nine months. He said he believes he was about twenty-eight years old. Not long before his illness he spent much of his time playing his accordion and violin for dancing and entertainment.
CHARLES FREDERICH SOMMERKORN (SOMMERCORN)
1855 - 1946

Although Fred had been interested in several girls since he was about eighteen years old, he never grew serious about the prospect of marriage until he met my mother, Rosine Katherine Finkbeiner, a little dark-eyed, dark haired maid from Germany. She was a very attractive little lady and had come with an Aunt and her brother Carl and her sister Caroline. She was about twenty-one years of age. About two years after he married her on September 30, 1885 on his thirtieth birthday. Reverend Carl Freitag of Saint Stephens Evangelical Church performed the ceremony at Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin and a record of their marriage can be found in the registers of that church.
At the time of the marriage, Fred was doing some lumbering on a homestead in a very timbered section of the country. Much of Wisconsin was heavily timbered at that time. One fall, he was doing some heavier logging and n
