Name Origin

The name was fabricated by Swen Andersson who immigrated to the US from Tocksfors, Varmland, Sweden. He said that "everyone" in the Dakota Territory was named Swen Andersson, so he changed his name to Swan Tockselius (after his home in Tocksfors, Sweden). He married Johanna Viken (1863-1866), an immigrant from Trysil, Norway. She died of typhoid when their daughter, Agnes, was 6 months old. Then, Swan met Ida Bernhardette Hansen, and she did not like his last name, so he changed it to Taxelius before they married.

Swan Taxelius was born in 1850 at Tocksfors, Sweden, and died at age 99 years old in 1949 at Spokane, WA.

Agnes Taxelius Tobyn Jun 18, 1886 - May 1980 Salt Lake City, Utah
Taxelius is not the real paternal family name. Her father, Sven Andersson emigrated from Tocksfors, Varmland, Sweden. After arriving in ND, he said that everyone was named Sven Andersson, so changed his name to Swan Tockselius (after his home town). After the death of Agnes' mother from typhoid (when Agnes was 9 months old), Swan married Ida Bernhardette Hansen of Redwing, MN. Agnes married John Albert Tobin on April 24, 1909. Since there was another John Tobin in the phonebook, he changed the spelling to Tobyn. He said that it more closely reflected the history of his family, which was French (De S Aubyn -> D'Aubyn -> Tobin when his branch migrated to Ireland). In the early 19th century, his grandfather moved to the US, gambled along the Mississippi River, then settled in new Orleans. John and Agnes had four children: Marjorie Agnes (1910-1994); Dorothy Ann (1911-2003); Kathleen Virginia (1913-2003) and John Taxelius (1919-1974). Only Dorothy had children: a son, Vernon Lester Stevenson, Jr., and daughter, Marjorie Ann Stevenson. Only Marjorie has children: Robert Tobyn May and Richard Forrest May. Only Richard has children: Ruby Penrose Lytle and Chantilly. There are, however, adopted and step-children in the last 2 generations.
