Asturias, (northern) Spain, possibly originating in the community of Candamo. Today there are indigenous "Tolivars" in Grado and Oviedo, Asturias, as well as a small diaspora (which includes me) in the United States.
Name Origin
May be related to iron-working.

None authentic, IMO. But in a Spanish record of 1798, I find it spelled "Tholivar."

He was my grandfather, and was born in Grado, Asturias, Spain, a pleasant commercial and residential community 15 miles from Oviedo. He was educated, and came to the U.S. (via Cuba) hoping to become rich as a cigar manufacturer... and then (I think, but don't know) he probably thought to return to Asturias as a rich man, which was a pattern for ambitious young men of his time... What intervened was tuberculosis, and ... suicide. [This web page is not working well.].
