Johnson and Anderson changed to Tolander and Tollander when arriving to America from Sweden.

History

Tollanders, some were previously Johnson or Anderson, owned Tolstad Lake. They built a bed and breakfast for fishermen, and rented boats and fishing gear for the men, and stored their catches charging by the pound. When the sons wanted more land there wasn't any available to buy for them, so two sons headed for America after receiving a letter that there was land available to purchase and plenty of food to eat! This was during the great winter also when sweden ran out of food; in America it was said, by letter, that one could throw a fork and it would land in a wild pig's back. At entrance they changed their name to Tollander or Tolander to reflect their origins of Tolstad, Sweden. They purchased land up north and started a Christmas tree farm. Some married and moved south to the midwest.
