My Uncle Jim was the second but oldest boy in the family. He married my Mother's best friend in high school; Kathryn Bowers. (Aunt Katie) Jim learned to set tile from his Dad and worked for him for a long time before going out on his own. He was the father of ten children. My Aunt Katie died rather young so Jim was on his own for awhile since all the kids had moved out. He was forced to retire because of his Arthritis that caused him to be bedridden for the last six years of his life. He had met and married Doris who selflessly took care of him all throughout his illness. Doris made my Uncle JImmy happy which I never saw when he was married to my Aunt Katie. They were both always nice to me and my brothers. We weren't around them very much though since my Dad didn't care for my Mother's family except for my Uncle Dick (Richard and Aunt Leah and also my Great Aunt Mamie).
My Grandmother was a very independent woman with a heart of gold. She would help anyone that needed it if it was within her power. She was able to work during the Great Depression but times were still hard for the family. Despite some hard times there was so much love in their home and my Uncle told me recently that there was never a cross word spoken but lots of laughter and good times. Grandma taught me to can, sew, embroidery, crochet, iron, cook (she had her own restaurant at one time in Mission, KS), type, keep score in baseball and bowling like the pros, and anything that had to do with homemaking the old fashioned way. She could make her own butter, cream, and bread. Everything was made from scratch always. Her favorite leisure activity was bowling. She bowled until she was in her early 70's in more than one league! When the Pro Am Bowlers came to Overland Park, KS at King Louie West Lanes in the 60's, she kept score for all the famous bowlers. She said they were very superstitious and very picky how their scorecards were filled out. Of course this was before the auto score machines we have today. Grandma also loved to fish but didn't do much in her later years. She had contracted cancer and had 12 operations and radiation and chemo therapy to try and beat this disease but in the end it was found in her bones so that was the end of her life. She lived well over 12 years after her first surgeries and her case was written up in the AMA Journal because it was very rare for someone to survive what she went through. I watched her suffer so, that she weighed over 300 lbs when she first was diagnosed down to around 110 right before she passed away. She had 17 grandchildren and even more great grandchildren. One ironic fact about her is that when she was a young lady she dated Walt Disney for a long time. He proposed marriage to her and she turned him down and told him that she didn't think a struggling artist could properly support a family! Then she married my Grandpa James E Tompson on Dec. 26, 1925 which is also my Dad's birthday! My mother Lucille was her oldest child and was born nine months after Grandma and Grandpa were married. Grandma came by her strength naturally from her Mother, Lucille Lyda Spear. She was the only child although triplet brothers were born but only lived about a month~the medical advantages to save them were not available at that time like they are today. I can speak for ALL her grandchildren in saying we wouldn't and couldn't ask for a better more loving Grandma than Charlotte Tompson~May God Rest Her Soul.
Leah was the Mother of four children; two of them being fraternal twins. She had also lost a set of twins boys. She met and married Richard (Dick) Tompson and was a stay at home Mom during the children's early years. She was a very clean person and her house was always spotless. She dressed well and never had a hair out of place! Leah also had a great sense of humor which the kids enjoyed especially when they could team up with her on a gag towards their Dad~who was also a very funny man. Leah was very family oriented and was very close to both sides of her family.
