Frank Tornabene Newspaperman, short story writer, liberal democrat, and innovator in the field of art publishing, died on February 9, 2005 at age 80. The cause of death was pulmonary fibrosis, a disease he battled for seven years. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lyn Tornabene, the writer; their grandson, Luke, two; and Frank’s sister, Ninfa Leddo of California, and her family. He is predeceased by his daughter, Wendy Lyn, who died last November at age 37. A U.S. Army veteran who took great pride in his World War II service in the South Pacific, Frank went to Tulane University on the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1950, a budding journalist. He worked for the New York World Telegram & Sun until that newspaper folded, then became co-founder of Scafa-Tornabene Art Publishing in Rockland County, N.Y. He retired in 1988 and began spending winters in Tucson. For nearly 30 years, Frank lived with his family in Greenwich, Connecticut, in a home he designed. He built a covered bridge over the back yard brook, planted his Christmas trees, drove his beloved daughter around on his John Deere tractor, and had shouting fights with muskrats, bullfrogs, and his computer. When, in 1995, he and Lyn moved to Tucson fulltime, Frank became a passionate supporter of the University of Arizona’s Fine Arts Department, and a take-no-prisoners fan of the school’s championship basketball team. An ardent admirer of Southwestern art, he collected an impressive array of paintings and Native American artifacts. Finally free to pursue a dream, Frank turned to creative writing. He published two anthologies of short stories, a novel and a cartoon book. He also became president of the Society of Southwestern Writers. He was an avid golfer and tricky tennis player; friends called him “the silver fox.” He laughed a lot, got seasick easily, and could make life happen magically. He was a long way from the depression kid of Graves End, Brooklyn, where he was born, and a sterling example of the Greatest Generation. We’ll never see the likes of him again. Memorial service 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2005 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.
