The name is ancient in Sweden and appeared in Swedish technological and scientific text in the nineteenth century. It appears in two or three isolated areas in England and Wales and appears to be an ancient family name there as well.

Perhaps more researchers can add to this theory but in ancient Welsh, a "troell-back" was a very sought after spinning wheel for spinning the finest threads. A Welsh Wikopedia site defines "Trell" as spin or spinning. In the city of Wichmannshausen on the banks of the headwaters of the Wesser River in southern Germany the Troell family were wheelwrights and coopers and, except for possible derivations of the name, this is the only known area in Germany where the name appears.
