History

My Grandmother was Winifred Rose van Praagh. What we have been told was that the name originated with a Jewish man by the name of Joseph, who fought with distinction to defend Prague in the Prussian wars, and was given the name Joseph Uit Praagh as an honour. This means Joseph of Praagh. The family had lived in Mikulov which is near Brno south of Prague. Their home still stands and is now a restaurant. My brother visited it.
The family later emigrated to Groningen Netherlands where the name became van Praagh meaning “from Praagh” in Dutch language .
My branch of the family was Jewish until my great grandfather moved to England to work with the Royal family. I suspect the change to Anglican may have been a requirement. My great grandfather was William Van Praagh and he was a Harley street specialist having developed a way to teach the deaf and dumb to speak, which is why he was called to work with the Royal family. Peggy van Praagh the ballet dancer is my second cousin once removed, and James van Praagh the renowned psychic from California is also a close relative.
