History

Wirasekara and Weerasekara are titular surnames givern either by the Sri Lankan Royalty or the British Royalty. Weerasekara title was given in the19th century to the Liyanaarachchi (Clerk) of the Welitota Totamune (Harour.) His name was Dines Weerasekara Liyanarachchi. Liyanaarachchi was droped later on. His Grandson Richard Isaac Wirasekara became the Mudaliar of the Supreme Court of Ceylon. An appeciation about him was published even in SIngapore and also mentioned in the Golden Book of India and Ceylon. . 
Next generation had a dispute and some of the brothers went to the extent of changing the spelling os their name to Wirasekara. Notable decendents were Dr. Verona Wirasekara the first SInhalese Lady Doctor.
Another Wirasekara married the daughter of Muhandiram Adiris Mendis Wickremesinghe who was the wealthiest citized in Colombo at the time.
Another Wirasekara married Sir Francis de Zoysa's father and forefather of the the famous de Zoysa clan of Ragama (Sidney de Zoysa, Licien de Zoysa, Bunty de Zoysa etc. and the sister VIolet married Gate Mudaliar Tudor Rajapakse of the Kappina Walauwa) 
Another famous Wirasekara is Hugh Weerasekara who was the founder of Ceylon Insurance Company which later on became the Ceylinco Insurance. Jayantha Wirasekara the famous linguist was asnother Wirasekara.
