Catherine Alana Worthingham was born in 1903 to Charles Worthingham and his wife June A. (Roath) in Marseilles, La Salle County, IL. She had at least one sibling, Anna (1907). Not only did Catherine A. share her name with her father’s sister, aunt Catherine E. Worthingham Williams (1847-1912), but also a birthday (March 22) with her uncle, Silas Williams (1841-1910), a Streator, IL industrialist. Silas and Catherine E. Williams were the parents of four children: twins, who died in early infancy, and two daughters, Alice Amelia Williams (1876-1936) and Blanche Catherine Williams Fanning (1880-1943), who married in 1907. Alice was educated at Vassar College, and after her parents died, she sold the family home to Edward Baker in about 1913. In Corona, California she established herself as an expert in gardening and landscaping. In Streator she had served as a Park District supervisor & was well-known for her fine library of literature in her large family home at 702 E. Broadway St. A move to California was made by Alice, Blanche, and Charles Worthingham. In California, before her death in an automobile accident in 1936, Alice Amelia had adopted Catherine A. Worthingham (it is uncertain if this was a matter of legal adoption), Catherine A's parents, Charles and June, having died in 1930 and 1932. By this time Alice and Blanche had been the beneficiaries in the estate of their mother, a very wealthy woman on the death of Silas Williams, whose estate left $86,200 (valued at approximately $12,000,000 in 2020). This quite probably provided the opportunity for a fine education for Catherine A. Worthingham (who was, in fact, a cousin of Alice Williams!). Catherine A Worthingham received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College in 1923. A career that began with teaching physical education at Claremont High School, and then at San Jose State College (one of her specialties appears to be dance) was followed by a Master's Degree in 1931 from the University of Southern California. This led to a job with the orthopedic hospital in Los Angeles. This was followed by her work with the March of Dimes (she was a proponent of the sister Kenny polio treatment therapies), and her appointment to the presidency (1940-1944) of the American Physical Therapy Association. After an honorary Doctorate of Science from Boston University in 1949 (based on her service with the March of Dimes as head of the education department), she went on to earn a Doctorate in Anatomy from Stanford University in 1950. She was the first physical therapist ever to achieve a Ph.D. in this area. The author of many Journal articles and books on muscle testing and therapeutic exercise (still currently in use!), Dr. Catherine A. Worthingham is considered a pioneer in the field of physical therapy. Today she is commemorated in the prestigious Catherine Worthingham Fellowship sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). She died in 1997, age 94 in Belmont, California, leaving a legacy of achievement and dedication to a community of patients, students, and professionals enriched by her life’s work.
