Name Origin
“One of the earliest written references to the surname Yelland and its variants Yolland and Yalland date back to the 13th century & includes one John de la Yaldelonde who appears in the Hundred Rolls of Devonshire in 1275. This English surname is locative in origin, belonging to that category of surnames derived from the place where the original bearer once lived or held land. In this instance, the noted scholar P. H. Reaney states that the surname Yelland was applied to one who lived at or near the old cultivated land, so called from the Old English “eald” meaning “old” and “land” meaning “land, countryside” or the various place names called Yelland located in Devonshire. Hanks & Hodges believe that it is conceivably possible that the surname may also be derived from the place name Yealand located in Lancashire, so called from the Old English “heah” meaning “high” and “land” meaning “land”. Early forms of the name found in Devonshire & Cornwall include de la Yalelande which was recorded in 1238, Attenoldelande in 1244, de la Yoldelonde in 1270, Yollelonde in 1281 & Yeallelond in 1333. Other early references to the surname include one Adam de Yelland, warden of the Honor of Lancaster who is recorded in Baine’s History of Lancashire during the reign of Henry III while William de Yeland is recorded in the Poll Tax Returns for Howdenshire in 1379. Edwin Yelland is recorded in the St. Austell birth & baptismal parish records in Cornwall between 1789 & 1835 while Philip Yelland is registered in the Wesleyan Circuit Births & Baptisms in Cornwall between 1804 & 1837.”
The document also describes the Blazon of Arms as “argent three eagles’ heads erased sable armed or”. This translates into “Argent (white) signifies Peace & Sincerity. Sable (black) denotes Constancy. Or (gold) signifies Generosity & Elevation of Mind.” The crest originates in England & consists of “an eagle’s head as in the arms.”
