John (Jack) Hunter married Jessie Moore Keast on 18 September, 1872, at the Wahgunyah Town Hall, north-east Victoria. In August, 1874, he and his wife owned a store at the Springs (later re-named Springhurst). He joined the Victorian Railways on 18 July, 1875, employed as a yardsman (shunter). He moved his family to Melbourne about this time and lived in West Melbourne, Hotham (North Melbourne and Kensington over the years, which was close to his employment. By 1911 he was foreman of the Spencer Street railway goods yard. One of his daughters (Agnes Catherine) married another railway worker (David Henry Godwin (or Goodwin) Cook) in 1903.
