Emmanuel Butcher
Emmanuel Butcher of Tingewick, England United Kingdom was born on October 29, 1865 in Tingewick, and died at age 66 years old on November 11, 1931.
The surname Butcher is of occupational origin, derived from the Old English word ‘boucher’ or ‘bochier’, which in turn comes from the Anglo-Norman French term ‘bouchier’. These words all mean a person who slaughters and sells meat, indicating that the original bearer of the name was likely someone who worked a a butcher. The Butcher Family connection in our family tree is through the Rowlin Family. The wife of Walter Boynton Staveley was Ruby Millicent Rowlin. Her sister, Beatrice Mary Butcher married Emmanuel Butcher. Emmanuel Butcher is the son of Benjamin Butcher (1830 – 1903 ) and Elizabeth Butcher ( born Barnes, 1829 – 1906 ). He was born in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire on 29th October 1865. At the age of 16 in the 1881 census, Emmanuel was boarding in Burill with Cowling, a small village near Bedale, about 15km southwest of Northallerton in Yorkshire. There is a 17th century manor house in Burrill and the houses stand along either side of the road, with the small Victorian church among them. Emmanuel was living there with two of his brothers Joseph & Jacob. They were employed as Iron Miners. Emmanuel is listed as a servant of the Manor House at Burrill. Emmanuel married Louise Burton on 25th March 1890 at York St Cuthbert’s Church in York. They had one daughter named Laura Elizabeth who was born in 1890. He separated from Louise around 1905. Emmanuel served with 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment and the 15th Leeds Pals during Great War. Ex Colour Sergeant. Served in Africa (Boar War) awarded Ashanti Star (1895-96), The Queens South africa medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Emmanuel served in France for about 18 months and invalided out as medically unfit. Joined Corps of Commissionaires in 1909 and was stationed at one of Messrs Price’s (Tailors) factories in Kirkstall ( photo ). Prior to meeting Emmanuel, Beatrice was assistant postmistress in Rudston in 1901 (in her fathers shop). In the 1901 census her address was 7 Church Hill Street, Bridlington. For a time Beatrice was a secretary to Charles Laughton’s (well know actor) father. She had small pox when friends of Charles Laughton came to visit from the far east. She was the manager of the bar in the Grand Hotel, Scarborough then ran the pub on the sea front called the ‘Golden Ball’. In the 1911 census Beatrice is listed as living at 17 Leeming Square in Leeds, age 28 and single. She is listed as a domestic servant with Emmanuel Butcher, age 45, who is head of the house and an army pensioner with his sons Emanuel Rowlin Butcher age 3 and Sidney Rowlin Butcher age 1. Since Emmanuel has separated from his first partner Louise in 1905 we can assume that Beatrice is the mother of his two sons and subsequent children, many of whom also share her family surname. Interestingly the records show Ruby Millicent Rowlin, her sister, who is aged 17 at the time, and visiting the house during the census. Beatrice Mary Rowlin, was born on July 2, 1881, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada ( See Rowlin Family for more details ). Together, they had ten children: Emanuel Rowlin, Sidney Rowlin, George Rowlin, Beatrice Rowlin, Ruby Rowlin, Major Rowin, Walter Rowlin, Albert, Joan, and Doris Maud. Emmanuel died on 8th November 1931 and was buried at St Stephen’s Church Kirkstall, Leeds, on 11th November. Emmanuel Butcher’s birth in 1865 occurred during the reign of Queen Victoria. This was a period of industrial expansion, social reform and strict moral codes. His family life would have been typical for a person with a rural English background, with large families being commonplace. Apart from his ten children by Beatrice and one child by his first partner Louise, he also had nine siblings. Emmanuel’s military record at various locations as a Sergeant in the infantry took him to conflicts which resulted in his injury and subsequent army pension. Leeds was expanding rapidly and gaining importance as an industrial hub, a place where his sons and daughters could find employment. The sons and daughters of Emmanuel and Beatrice would continue the Butcher family line until the present day. Their son Walter Butcher would give his life serving HMS Glorious the Aircraft Carrier which went down near Scapa Flow in 1940 with the loss of 1,200 lives. Emanuel Rowlin Butcher, Sidney Rowlin Butcher, Major Rowlin Butcher and Albert Butcher would all serve in the armed forces during WWII but they survived. In 1939 George Rowlin Butcher is living next door to Walter Boynton Staveley at 17 Monksbridge Avenue in Leeds. The Staveleys and Butchers were were well connected in those days. There is still a lot of work to be done on this family line to ascertain what happened to Louise Butcher and other family members. Did Beatrice eventually marry Emmanuel? So far I have not located any evidence that she did. In fact his probate record refers to him leaving Effects worth £110 14 shillings to Beatrice Rowlin spinster. John Beck, a chapel keeper, and Hannah Beck née Fox, who married at the Norfolk Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Sheffield, on 5th September 1861. At the time of his marriage John Beck stated that he was a twenty-six year old bachelor, the son of the later Augustine Beck, a farmer. Augustine Beck died at Hainford, Norfolk, on 6th March 1854 aged fifty-six years, and was therefore born around 1797-98. We calculated that John Beck had been born around 1834-35. This was before the introduction of civil registration in England and Wales. The main sources for ancestry research before the beginning of civil registration are the local parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. There is no complete index to English parish registers and it is essential to discover which parish or parishes to search for evidence of the earlier ancestry. Norfolk Street Chapel where John and Hannah got married was built in 1780, one of the largest in the Kingdom and opened by the founder of Methodism himself, who to the end of his long laborious life loved it and its people. The Methodism in Sheffield Park records on page 124 that John became a teacher for the chapel Sunday school in 1859. In January 1912 Mr John Beck retired from the position of caretaker after 43 years service in that capacity (Page 256). An extract from the book: “At the end of 1913 there passed from the scene of his labours, in more senses than one, John Beck, a veteran who had become almost one with the church. Spared to the age of nearly four-score years, fifty-three of which were spent in connection with the Park Church and forty-three of those in the position of caretaker. In addition to his care of the fabric he endeavoured to do other Christian work, serving in connection with the Cottage, Prayer Leaders’, and Tract Societies, and as a visitor. His wife, Hannah, was a diligent worker in the church from her youth, as we have noted in various connections, pre-deceased him in 1907. The last longing of this veteran was that he might live to see the Centenary Celebrations of the School, he being one of the few who were present at the Jubilee. It was not to be, however, for God took him”. By all accounts and from information passed down by Wilfred Beck, John was quite a jovial character and was forever playing tricks on the family much to the disapproval of his son John Samuel who was very straight laced by comparison. Eunice Marshall was born on the 27th March in 1907 the daughter of James Albert Marshall (1867-1909) and Ada Marshall nee Jackson (1870-1907). She was born at 20 Fox Hill Road, Wadsley Bridge, Ecclesfield Road in what was a suburb of Sheffield. Her father was a sheep sheer bender by trade at the time of her birth. Eunice was the penultimate child of 8 siblings. Clarice who was born after her died in infancy. Of her remaining siblings we have; Florence born 1888, Edith born 1890, Ruth Annie 1892, Albert 1895, Miriam 1900, John Albert 1902 and Willis born 1904. By 1911 the family had moved to 81 Page Hall Road in West Brightside, Sheffield. At this time we have Eunice aged 4 living with her grandfather and grandmother at the time of the census. Albert, Miriam, John and Willis are also here along with other Marshall children from another family. In total 8 children being looked after by John and Ruth Jackson aged 63 and 62. Quite a challenge for them at that age. Eunice grows up in a busy family and is very close to her sister Miriam. By the time of the 1939 census Eunice is a Shop Assistant ( Woolwork ) and living at 27 Beechwood Drive in Halifax. She will remain in Halifax until her death on September 4th 1994. She died at the age of 87 from a Cerebrovascular accident ( stroke ) at the Bankfield Rest Home, Hollins Lane, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax. A rose bush was planted in her name at the Park Wood Cemetery in Halifax. Family Website:
John Samuel Beck
John Samuel Beck was born on November 6, 1871, and died at age 75 years old on October 13, 1947 at High Storrs Cres, in United Kingdom. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember John Samuel Beck.
John Samuel Beck was born at the Chapel Yard, Duke Street in Sheffield. He is the son of John Beck (1835-1913) and Hannah Beck nee Fox (1838-1907). We do not know much about his childhood. John Samuel Beck appears to have been a fairly serious character unlike his father, the caretaker of the chapel where he was born, who was known for his sense of humour. At the time of the 1881 census the family is living at 21 Slough Street in Sheffield. John is aged 10. He has 9 siblings. Five brothers and four sisters. The Industrial Revolution brought large-scale steel making to Sheffield. John was a machinist, a steel turner. The family were not particularly well off and life would be centred around his employment and Church on Sunday. As a dedicated Wesleyan his life would have been very conservative and guided by strict moral codes and rules. John Samuel Beck was in the Sheffield Silver Band and used to play the flute and Piccolo. On the 24th January 1894 he marries Mary Anne Beck nee Hart at the Park Chapel and in the same year their son Wilfred Beck is born on the 29th October 1894. They are living at 16 Neville Street, Brightside, Sheffield until 1895. They then went to Philadelphia USA for a short period prior to returning to Sheffield. Unfortunately this marriage has no happy ending. By 1901 things are not going well. His wife is staying out late and in 1903 a petition for divorce is served. The local press are eager to report the information which was quite the local scandal at the time. His ex wife scuttles off to Birmingham with her new husband Henry Wells Brookfield. Some years later they are on a ship to Philadelphia. However, they do not seem to have made a success of it and they return to Sheffield and settle down with their children. So back to John Samuel Beck. The story has a happy ending. He marries Alice Maud Osborne in 1908 and Donald Beck is born on the 30th April 1910 in Sheffield. John Samuel Beck is now 38 years of age and they have no further additions to the family. His first son Wilfred and his second son Donald are half brothers. The 1911 census shows the family living at 79 Clun Road in Sheffield. At the time of the outbreak of WWII John Samuel Beck is 67 years old. His son Wilfred is called up for active duty and survives the war and gets married to Edith Beck ( nee Marshall ). Donald Beck ran his own business designing medical instruments for the administration of aneasthetic in hospitals. He married Mary Ellen Porter in Sheffield in 1936. Alice Beck dies in Sheffield in 1937. His first wife also dies in Sheffield in 1942. John lives with his son Donald at 55 High Storrs Crescent in Sheffield until his death on the 13th October 1947. He is buried at Shire Green Cemetary, Sheffield. Family Website: [external link] Photo of John Beck John Beck

Wilfred Beck was born on October 29, 1894 in Sheffield, England United Kingdom to John Samuel Beck. He married Edith Marshall on February 9, 1922. He was the parent of Ruth Staveley. Wilfred Beck died at age 73 years old on February 12, 1968 in Cheltenham. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Wilfred Beck.
Wilfred Beck was born on the 27th October 1894 at 16 Neville Street, Brightside, Sheffield. He is the son of John Samuel Beck (1871-1947) and Mary Anne Beck nee Hart (1872-1942). In 1901 the family are living at 44 Darwin Road. Wilfred is 6 years old. His father is a machinist. In 1904 his mother divorces John Samuel Beck and then gets married to a Henry Brookfield. His father marries Alice Maud Osborne in 1908 and Donald ( his half brother ) is born in 1910. At the time of the 1911 census Wilfred Beck is a 16 year old warehouseman apprentice for a cutters and silversmiths firm. Donald Beck his half brother is 11 months old. They are living at 79 Clun Road, Sheffield ( now an industrial estate ). When Wilfred was a young man he joined an amateur dramatics group and took the part of a comedian. He liked to amuse people. The makings of a salesman perhaps? The First World War commences on the 28th July 1914 and Wilfred is enlisted into the army in 1915. He is assigned to the 14th Battalion Suffolk Regiment and at the age of 21 he sees active service in France as a soldier. His army records show he is a Wesleyan Methodist. He is a short man only 5′ 2″ (1.57m) in height. Records show he had a pretty tough time with injuries, dysentry and a number of ailments caused mostly by the poor conditions of trench warfare. On the 24th March 1917 he is re assigned to the 6th Battalion York & Lancashire Regiment. This battalion would see action in Flanders for the battle of Messines. There were high casualties and the battalion would also see action in several major battles in France. The war and military service ends for him and he is transferred back to the UK on the 18th September 1919. Wilfred marries Edith Marshall on the 9th February 1922 at the Wincobank Parish Church. Their first child Hazel is born towards the end of 1922 and unfortunately dies as an infant. Some of the large wholesalers employed commercial travellers. Today they would be called Sales Representatives. Wilfred Beck seems to have found his forte in furniture sales. This employment provides much better opportunities but requires him to move around the country and travel a lot. Ruth Mary Beck is born on the 18th April 1929 at 95 Broadway East in Rotherham. The family remained in Rotherham until 1934 and then moved back to Sheffield. They spent some time in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham and also in Halifax. In 1931 Wilfred Beck was mentioned in the Sheffield Daily telegraph. A boy aged 6 ran out straight in front of his car and unfortunately as a result of his injuries. The inquest decided that Wilfred Beck was in no way to blame and a verdict of accidental death was recorded. This must have been quite traumatic for him. In 1939 the family are living at 27 Beechwood Drive in Halifax. With the outbreak of WWII Wilfred was 44 years of age and was not called up for active service. The call up age was between 18 & 41. The Beck family would have been one of the few families with access to a motor vehicle. The Morris 8 was Wilfred’s favourite choice as he travelled around the country. The family finally moved to Cheltenham in 1940 not long after the outbreak of World War II. Wilfred Beck was a keen water colour painter. He would paint landscapes but also people and drawings depicting scenes from daily life. Edith Beck passed away on the 24th April 1962 at Delancey Hospital in Cheltenham. Wilfred died on the 12th February 1968 at 20 Grosvenor Place in Cheltenham. Family Website: [external link] Photo of Wilfred Beck Wilfred Beck

Baron Rowlin ( 1857 – 1926 ). At age 22 when he gets married he is a butcher and his father is a farmer. Later he would change his profession to that of a coachman. The family history of the Rowlins has not been extensively covered but our own branch lived in Rudston, a village situated between Driffield and Bridlington. The Rudston Monolith, from which the village gets its name, is the tallest standing stone in England at over 25 feet ( 7.5 m ) tall. In 1901 we find the family running a post office in Rudston where Beatrice, who is now married to Emmanuel Butcher, is the assistant post mistress at her fathers shop. Walter Staveley ( 1921 – 2005 ) remembered Baron Rowlin proudly showing off his horse whip, which he once took to the children’s school after one of the girls ( possibly Ruby ) came home crying after being roughly punished. Baron Rowlin told the teacher that if it happened again he would be back with the whip and he would use it! As he got older he began to see strange faces and creatures crawling around, probably because of heavy drinking. Ruby Millicent Rowlin was born in Rudston on 20th February 1894. This would have been shortly after her mother and father returned to England from a three year stay in Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. Baron Rowlin’s brother, Francis ( Frank ) Rowlin ( 1843 – 1912 ) is our connection with Canada. He emigrated to Canada, initially Quebec, before settling in Hamilton, Ontario. Baron Rowlin would have been staying with his family. There are quite a few Staveleys in and around the Hamilton area in Canada. Family Website: [external link] Photo of Baron Rowlin Baron Rowlin
